Oscar Peterson (born in Montreal, Canada, on August 15, 1925; hepassed away on December 23, 2007 at the age of 82) was convinced byjazz producer Norman Granz to travel to the United States in 1949, wherehe became one of the most featured musicians in the “Granz caravan”,with respect to both studio recordings and as part of the touring Jazz atthe Philharmonic group. Peterson recorded as an accompanist for manyother stars, and also as a leader. While most of his sessions were withhis trio, the present album showcases him in piano-bass duets with RayBrown and Major Holley. Although he had been recorded by Granz playingat Carnegie Hall on September 18, 1949 (the three tunes were eventuallyreleased), the March 1950 date with Ray Brown marks the pianist’s firstAmerican studio recording, and Peterson’s original, the first tune recordedat that session, was appropriately titled “Debut”.
