born organist Larry Young (October 7, 1940 -March 30, 1978) pioneered a modal approach to theHammond B-3 (in contrast to Jimmy Smith’s soul jazzstyle). Young played with various R&B bands in the 1950sbefore gaining jazz experience with Jimmy Forrest, LouDonaldson, Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley and TommyTurrentine. Recording as a leader for Prestige from 1960,Young made a number of soul jazz discs, Testifying, YoungBlues (presented here) and Groove Street. When Youngsigned with Blue Note around 1964, his music began toshow the marked influence of John Coltrane. Young thenbecame a part of some of the earliest fusion groups: firston Emergency! with the Tony Williams Lifetime (with TonyWilliams and John McLaughlin) and also on Miles Davis’sBitches Brew. Young Blues was Young’s second albumas a leader.
