Pianist McCoy Tyner (age 80 at this writing) is the lastsurviving member of the legendary John ColtraneQuartet. He recorded over 80 albums between his1962 debut LP as a leader, Inception (presentedhere in its entirety), and his most recent release,Solo –Live from San Francisco (2009). Tyner wonfive Grammy Awards, and considerably broadenedthe horizons of the genre, blending modal jazz andfusion, hard bop and free jazz. Inception presentsthe John Coltrane Quartet rhythm section of thatperiod, with Art Davis on bass, and Elvin Joneson drums, and reviews at the time it was releasedmentioned that it was like a Coltrane disc withoutColtrane.
