Galvanized by seismic changes in the ever-evolving social and political landscape, Terri Lyne Carrington and Social Science confront a wide spectrum of social justice issues. The band’s stunning double disc debut, immediately takes its place in the stirring lineage of politically activist music, expressing an unflinching, inclusive and compassionate view of humanity’s breaks and bonds through an expansive set melding contemporary jazz, R&B, indie rock, hip-hop, spoken word and electronic music. • The album is poised to strike a major chord in the US, UK and internationally, in these turbulent times as it brilliantly addresses a host of headline issues: the injustices of mass incarceration (“Trapped in the American Dream”), police brutality (“Bells (Ring Loudly)”), homophobia (“Pray the Gay Away”), the genocide of Native Americans (“Purple Mountains”), political prisoners (“No Justice”), and gender equity (“If Not Now” and “The Anthem”) and the ultimate need for compassion (“Love” – a gorgeous cover of the Joni Mitchell classic.
