When rock and roll came along, we knew that the Brits couldn’tcompete with the Americans. In some cases we had the talent butuntil the Beatles and the beat boom in 1963, the performers hadto battle with staid and safe productions made by men in whitecoats at EMI, Decca, Philips and Pye Records. The one exceptionand the man ahead of the pack was Joe Meek, who created hismystic sounds at his studio above a leather shop at 304 HollowayRoad, Islington in north London. He loved echo, distortion andstrange instruments and he was certainly a pioneer, a maverickand an outlaw. This double CD, appropriately enough by theOutlaws, contains 28 of his productions. Meek wrote 18 of them,either under his own name or as Robert Duke.
