Benny Goodman’s celebrated January 16, 1938 concert at Carnegie Hall was alandmark for many reasons: it was the first jazz concert at the prestigious venue,it integrated white and Afro-American stars on the same stage, and, above all, itproduced glorious music which hasn’t lost its magic after 80 years. Goodmanwas the star. He was featured with his orchestra, and in a variety of small groups,including combos with members of the Count Basie band, and Goodman’s ownTrio and Quartet with Teddy Wilson, Lionel Hampton, and Gene Krupa.
