With Charlie Parker under contract, producer NormanGranz recorded him in a variety of contexts, amongthem putting Bird’s sax in front of a Latin rhythmsection. A couple of sessions, from which eight tunesended up on the 10” LP South of the Border (MercuryMGC-513), featured Bird with small groups includingveteran jazz players with the addition of José Mangualon bongos and Luis Miranda on congas. All of themaster takes from those dates, along with Bird’sstudio recordings with Machito’s big band, have beenincluded on this CD, which also contains severalalternate takes from the sessions.
