Keyboardist, bandleader and composer Dave Brubeck is the manthe New York Times credited with ‘helping make jazz popularagain in the Fifties and Sixties. He did not always please thecritics (but) the oppositional push and- pull between his piano andPaul Desmond’s alto saxophone make the Brubeck Quartet’s bestwork still sound original.’ In Britain, the Daily Telegraph calledBrubeck ‘one of the most famous jazz musicians of the 20thcentury’, adding that ‘his recording of “Take Five” remains one ofthe few jazz records instantly recognised by members of thegeneral public.’ But, as fans know, there was more to DaveBrubeck’s music than one composition or album.
