"The Berlin Concert" is an absolute knock-out. Here we have three of today´s major singers, all at the top of their form, incredibly responsive to each other, all having a fabulous time, as did the audience . . . High points of the program are a magnificent love duet from Otello, the big duet from The "Pearl Fishers" with Domingo (singing the baritone part) and Villazón, Netrebko´s stunning "O mio babbino caro," and the Act I conclusion of "La Bohčme", with the dream duo Netrebko/Villazón. Excitement mounts as the program proceeds from one treasure to another, and the encores include Villazón´s tremendously virile La danza, Domingo singing zarzuela, and Netrebko´s Musetta. The concert ends with a thrilling "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz" from The Land of Smiles, sung by all three, in which the interplay between the singers and the incredible singing are pure pleasure . . . This is a DVD I will return to often. Get it!

The crowd estimated at 20,000 eats it all up, and so will home viewers who´ll relish the prospect of great singers performing great music . . . Domingo is his usual self, still remarkable at an age when most tenors have called it quits. He sings with intensity and a voice undimmed by the passing of time. Domingo´s duets with his partners are notable for his acute phrasing, the highlights being the first-act love duet from Verdi´s "Otello" with Netrebko´s gorgeous lyric Desdemona and the ravishing duet with Villazón from Bizet´s "The Pearlfishers", in which he takes on the baritone role. Netrebko . . . is in excellent voice, with luminous pianissimos most sopranos wish they could emulate. Her Puccini arias are beautifully sung, and she even offers a Franz Lehár aria and a charmingly accented duet, "Tonight," from "West Side Story" with Villazón. But if anyone can be said to steal the show it´s Villazón, a singer in perpetual motion, who brings the house down with a version of Rossini´s "La Danza" full of dash and brio . . . Expert accompaniments are by the Orchestra of the Deutsche Opera of Berlin under the baton of conductor Marco Armiliato, who also offers several well-shaped operatic overtures and intermezzos and joins in the fun during the unbuttoned encores . . . a terrific concert.

Vor zwei Jahren hatte das Traumtrio der Oper die Massen in Atem gehalten: Das legendäre Konzert von Anna Netrebko und ihren beiden Tenor-Partnern Rolando Villazón und Plácido Domingo auf der Berliner Waldbühne hatten Millionen Zuschauer gebannt vor den Fernsehbildschirmen verfolgt. Kein Wunder, dass sich der daraus hervorgegangene Mitschnitt sensationell umsetzen ließ. Für mehr als 50.000 verkaufte DVDs bekamen die drei Künstler in Anschluss an ihr gemeinsames Konzert vor Schloss Schönbrunn in Wien eine Platin-DVD überreicht.

Bei Anna Netrebko . . . geht es nicht nur um Wunder-Sopran, sondern immer auch um Augenschmaus. Der gerade erschienene Mitschnitt des Berliner Waldbühnen-Konzerts vom 7. Juli verkauft sich folgerichtig vortrefflich. Von einem Auszug aus Verdis »La Traviata« bis zu Lehárs »Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiß« liefert die Surround-DVD die Höhepunkte des Spree-Musikabends fürs Heimkino. Auch 2007 macht sich die rassige Russin kein bisschen rar: Gleich 14-mal gastiert sie auf deutschen Bühnen.

Jeder, der das Glück hatte, an jenem schwülem Juliabend dabei zu sein, wird ihn sicher in schöner Erinnerung behalten. Alle anderen können sich auf jüngst erschienener DVD, die die Aufführungsatmosphäre erstaunlich realistisch einzufangen vermag, ansehen, was ihnen entging . . . Etwas Besonderes und mit außergewöhnlichen Highlights . . . Beachtenswerter ist da natürlich Sopran-Starlet Anna Netrebko, die sich ganz Ihrer Rolle als singende Verführerin hingibt und hierfür ihre warm-strahlende Stimme über die zweiundzwanzigtausend Besucher im weiten Rund der Waldbühne ergießt. Die Netrebko singt so, wie man sie von den Bühnen großer Opernhäuser her kennt: klangschön, sicher in Höhe und Tiefe, mit guter Textverständlichkeit, jedoch monoton in Farbgebung und Partiegestaltung. Das fällt besonders dann ins Gewicht, wenn sie mit Rolando Villazón und Plácido Domingo zwei absolute Bühnentiere und Meister des Musiktheaters neben sich hat. Villazón wirft, wie immer, Köper, Geist und Stimme zu gleichen Anteilen in die Waagschale, verausgabt sich von der ersten bis zur letzten Note, lebt das zu besingende Drama immer zu 100% selbst . . .
Das wirkliche Highlight des Abends ist aber Plácido Domingo, der mit seinen offiziell fünfundsechzig Jahren (man kann sicher bedenkenlos das ein oder andere hinzuaddieren) für die wirklichen Gänsehautmomente sorgt. Es macht immer wieder sprachlos, mit welch farblichen Schattierungen der Spanier auch heute noch zu agieren weiß, wie eindringlich er Wort und Note zu einer spannungsgeladenen Einheit zu verbinden versteht. Domingo interagiert mit Solisten und Orchester wie kaum ein anderer: Wirklich groß, wie er in "Giŕ nella notte densa" aus Verdis "Otello" alle Register der Opernkunst auch in dieser konzertanten Variante zu ziehen vermag . . . sich aber auch im Duett mit seinem Schüler Villazón in "Au du temple saint" aus den Perlenfischern sachdienlich ins zweite Glied fügt und enorme baritonale Wärme verströmt. Kein Wunder also, dass es nach Domingos Solo-Zugabe "No puede ser" aus Pablo Sorozabáls "La tabernera del puerto" keinen der Besucher mehr auf dem Sitzt hielt. Hier kann es für viele Sänger dieser Welt nur heißen: Domingo hören und lernen! . . . Die DVD jedenfalls ist das Dokument eines Abends großer Stimmen, die viele Fans in aller Welt bewegen.

Two Tenors and a Soprano
Operatic Love-Feast at Berlin´s Waldbühne
What the Hollywood Bowl is to the movie capital, the Waldbühne (literally: stage in the forest) is to the German capital - a summer festival venue within the city limits. In 1936, a huge amphitheatre was built into a steep wooded hollow in western Berlin, simultaneously with the adjacent Olympic Stadium. Although it´s become more famous as a venue for rock musicians than for classical ones, even the lofty Berliner Philharmoniker has lately been making its way to the Waldbühne for an annual summer appearance. And on the sultry Friday evening of 7 July 2006, timed as a prelude to the World Cup final two days later at the stadium - evocations of the first "Three Tenors" jamboree in 1990 at the Caracalla Baths, on the eve of the Rome World Cup final, could have been lost on no one - more than 20,000 opera lovers were treated to a Waldbühne concert featuring three of the world´s most exciting classical singers. The legendary Plácido Domingo, his Mexican protégé Rolando Villazón, and the hot Russian soprano Anna Netrebko: all three enjoy the operatic equivalent of rock-star status.
More than 8 million viewers in Germany, Austria, Norway, France, Italy, Mexico, India and South America tuned in live or via delayed telecasts to the event - dubbed the biggest classical broadcast since The Three Tenors. Now DVD home viewers everywhere can revel in the concert reported by the Berlin daily Die Welt with the headline "Two Tenors and a Woman" and hailed by the German TV announcer as the "Summit Meeting of the World Stars". Admittedly, in your living room or home theatre you may miss some of the stadium´s heady atmosphere, yet you´ll be amply compensated by getting to see the three artists up close, and to hear them in optimized audio, sympathetically supported by the Orchestra of Berlin´s Deutsche Oper under Marco Armiliato, frequent conductor at the Met, Vienna State and San Francisco opera companies as well as a regular collaborator with Domingo.
The high-calorie programme resembles - as one listener put it - "a pound of bonbons" - all crowd-pleasers. And why not? That´s the nature of these occasions, and the hungry audience relished every sweet morsel. The critics, too, were ecstatic. "This evening is the stuff of myth", trumpeted the Berliner Morgenpost. "Firebrand Villazón is the opera world´s new seductive tenor, one who interprets everything with a wealth of colours and nuances yet still remains unpredictable. It´s like love at first sight." Whether joining Domingo for a big-boned account of the famous duet from Bizet´s Pearl Fishers (with the older tenor taking the baritone part) or, in an overtly theatrical encore, electrifying the audience with the Neapolitan exuberance of Rossini´s La danza, Villazón poured out a steady stream of red-hot tone all evening.
Anna Netrebko, the other half of opera´s new "dream couple", charmed the pants off everyone in Puccini´s "O mio babbino caro", hedonistically stretching out high notes and phrases ad infinitum. Delivering "Meine Lippen, die küssen so heiss" costumed and lit in bright red, Netrebko began "with shy, maidenly charm", wrote Hamburg´s Abendblatt, "but by the time she declared to Lehár´s waltz music - with maximum conviction - that her ´lips kiss so hotly´ ... the happiness of 20,000 listeners was complete."
The evening´s spiritus rector was, of course, the tenor of tenors himself - surely, as the Guardian pronounced him not long ago, "the greatest operatic artist of modern times". Paul Moor, reviewing this concert for Musical America echoed the sentiment: "Grey-bearded Domingo at 65 remains a phenomenon ... With Netrebko as his ... ravishing Desdemona, his love duet from Verdi´s Otello stood up to what I vividly recall as his unforgettably powerful performance the inaugural night of the Los Angeles Music Center Opera about 20 years ago."
The Welt am Sonntag added a concurring voice. Singing together with Netrebko for the first time, Domingo´s "vocal colours still meet the highest standards", wrote the paper´s music critic; "his tones evince power and depth of feeling ... Domingo´s mere presence enchants an audience ... he still works his magic." And praising his two colleagues of the evening, the reviewer continued: "In her artistry, more than any other singer, Netrebko symbolizes the combination of skill, charisma and naturalness ... Villazón is the perfect masculine counterpart. At times he can be the clowning Mexican, at others the tragic clown - by the end everyone has been touched by him. His eyebrow gestures alone can tell a story. Great opera needs protagonists like these."
Clearly today´s opera fans also need and love them: "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz - My heart is yours alone", the Waldbühne concert´s final encore, looked and sounded every bit a double declaration of love, between the three singers and between them and their cheering, musically intoxicated fans.

Beachtenswerter ist da natürlich Sopran-Starlet Anna Netrebko, die sich ganz Ihrer Rolle als singende Verführerin hingibt und hierfür ihre warm-strahlende Stimme über die zweiundzwanzigtausend Besucher im weiten Rund der Waldbühne ergießt. Die Netrebko singt so, wie man sie von den Bühnen großer Opernhäuser her kennt: klangschön, sicher in Höhe und Tiefe, mit guter Textverständlichkeit, jedoch monoton in Farbgebung und Partiegestaltung. Das fällt besonders dann ins Gewicht, wenn sie mit Rolando Villazón und Plácido Domingo zwei absolute Bühnentiere und Meister des Musiktheaters neben sich hat. Villazón wirft, wie immer, Köper, Geist und Stimme zu gleichen Anteilen in die Waagschale, verausgabt sich von der ersten bis zur letzten Note, lebt das zu besingende Drama immer zu 100% selbst . . .
Das wirkliche Highlight des Abends ist aber Plácido Domingo, der mit seinen offiziell fünfundsechzig Jahren (man kann sicher bedenkenlos das ein oder andere hinzuaddieren) für die wirklichen Gänsehautmomente sorgt. Es macht immer wieder sprachlos, mit welch farblichen Schattierungen der Spanier auch heute noch zu agieren weiß, wie eindringlich er Wort und Note zu einer spannungsgeladenen Einheit zu verbinden versteht. Domingo interagiert mit Solisten und Orchester wie kaum ein anderer: Wirklich groß, wie er in "Giŕ nella notte densa" aus Verdis "Otello" alle Register der Opernkunst auch in dieser konzertanten Variante zu ziehen vermag . . . sich aber auch im Duett mit seinem Schüler Villazón in "Au du temple saint" aus den Perlenfischern sachdienlich ins zweite Glied fügt und enorme baritonale Wärme verströmt. Kein Wunder also, dass es nach Domingos Solo-Zugabe "No puede ser" aus Pablo Sorozabáls "La tabernera del puerto" keinen der Besucher mehr auf dem Sitzt hielt. Hier kann es für viele Sänger dieser Welt nur heißen: Domingo hören und lernen! . . . Die DVD jedenfalls ist das Dokument eines Abends großer Stimmen, die viele Fans in aller Welt bewegen.

Two Tenors and a Soprano
Operatic Love-Feast at Berlin´s Waldbühne
What the Hollywood Bowl is to the movie capital, the Waldbühne (literally: stage in the forest) is to the German capital - a summer festival venue within the city limits. In 1936, a huge amphitheatre was built into a steep wooded hollow in western Berlin, simultaneously with the adjacent Olympic Stadium. Although it´s become more famous as a venue for rock musicians than for classical ones, even the lofty Berliner Philharmoniker has lately been making its way to the Waldbühne for an annual summer appearance. And on the sultry Friday evening of 7 July 2006, timed as a prelude to the World Cup final two days later at the stadium - evocations of the first "Three Tenors" jamboree in 1990 at the Caracalla Baths, on the eve of the Rome World Cup final, could have been lost on no one - more than 20,000 opera lovers were treated to a Waldbühne concert featuring three of the world´s most exciting classical singers. The legendary Plácido Domingo, his Mexican protégé Rolando Villazón, and the hot Russian soprano Anna Netrebko: all three enjoy the operatic equivalent of rock-star status.
More than 8 million viewers in Germany, Austria, Norway, France, Italy, Mexico, India and South America tuned in live or via delayed telecasts to the event - dubbed the biggest classical broadcast since The Three Tenors. Now DVD home viewers everywhere can revel in the concert reported by the Berlin daily Die Welt with the headline "Two Tenors and a Woman" and hailed by the German TV announcer as the "Summit Meeting of the World Stars". Admittedly, in your living room or home theatre you may miss some of the stadium´s heady atmosphere, yet you´ll be amply compensated by getting to see the three artists up close, and to hear them in optimized audio, sympathetically supported by the Orchestra of Berlin´s Deutsche Oper under Marco Armiliato, frequent conductor at the Met, Vienna State and San Francisco opera companies as well as a regular collaborator with Domingo.
The high-calorie programme resembles - as one listener put it - "a pound of bonbons" - all crowd-pleasers. And why not? That´s the nature of these occasions, and the hungry audience relished every sweet morsel. The critics, too, were ecstatic. "This evening is the stuff of myth", trumpeted the Berliner Morgenpost. "Firebrand Villazón is the opera world´s new seductive tenor, one who interprets everything with a wealth of colours and nuances yet still remains unpredictable. It´s like love at first sight." Whether joining Domingo for a big-boned account of the famous duet from Bizet´s Pearl Fishers (with the older tenor taking the baritone part) or, in an overtly theatrical encore, electrifying the audience with the Neapolitan exuberance of Rossini´s La danza, Villazón poured out a steady stream of red-hot tone all evening.
Anna Netrebko, the other half of opera´s new "dream couple", charmed the pants off everyone in Puccini´s "O mio babbino caro", hedonistically stretching out high notes and phrases ad infinitum. Delivering "Meine Lippen, die küssen so heiss" costumed and lit in bright red, Netrebko began "with shy, maidenly charm", wrote Hamburg´s Abendblatt, "but by the time she declared to Lehár´s waltz music - with maximum conviction - that her ´lips kiss so hotly´ ... the happiness of 20,000 listeners was complete."
The evening´s spiritus rector was, of course, the tenor of tenors himself - surely, as the Guardian pronounced him not long ago, "the greatest operatic artist of modern times". Paul Moor, reviewing this concert for Musical America echoed the sentiment: "Grey-bearded Domingo at 65 remains a phenomenon ... With Netrebko as his ... ravishing Desdemona, his love duet from Verdi´s Otello stood up to what I vividly recall as his unforgettably powerful performance the inaugural night of the Los Angeles Music Center Opera about 20 years ago."
The Welt am Sonntag added a concurring voice. Singing together with Netrebko for the first time, Domingo´s "vocal colours still meet the highest standards", wrote the paper´s music critic; "his tones evince power and depth of feeling ... Domingo´s mere presence enchants an audience ... he still works his magic." And praising his two colleagues of the evening, the reviewer continued: "In her artistry, more than any other singer, Netrebko symbolizes the combination of skill, charisma and naturalness ... Villazón is the perfect masculine counterpart. At times he can be the clowning Mexican, at others the tragic clown - by the end everyone has been touched by him. His eyebrow gestures alone can tell a story. Great opera needs protagonists like these."
Clearly today´s opera fans also need and love them: "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz - My heart is yours alone", the Waldbühne concert´s final encore, looked and sounded every bit a double declaration of love, between the three singers and between them and their cheering, musically intoxicated fans.
