Mendelssohn's String Octet is the epitome of joy. Mendelssohn weaves deft and subtle conversations among the musicians. Visconti's "Eternal Breath is based on a simple "breathing" phrase, which becomes more elaborate as the melody is passed around the ensemble. Golijov's "Last Round" is a tribute to Astor Piazzolla. The quartets square off, lunging and feinting with dangerous quickness.
