Miles Davis’ first classic quintet was formed in1955 and is widely regarded as one of the greatestcombos in jazz history. Workin’ was the third in aseries of four albums featuring the group recordedbetween May and October of 1956. The programpresents some tunes the quintet had been playinglive, along with others that appear to have beenimprovised on the spot and which had never beenpreviously recorded. Two short readings of “TheTheme” were used to close the two sides of theoriginal LP. Miles had recorded a longer version ofthe tune for his previous album The New Miles DavisQuintet. “Trane’s Blues” is an improvised blues byJohn Coltrane, and “Ahmad’s Blues” is a tune bypianist Ahmad Jamal, for whom Miles repeatedlyexpressed his admiration.
