Considered one of the very fi rst bebop tenorsaxophonists, Dexter Gordon (1923-1990) beganplaying clarinet at the tender age of seven. By the timehe was fi fteen he had already played in bands withChico Hamilton and Buddy Collette! He formed part ofthe Lionel Hampton and Louis Armstrong orchestrasin the early forties, and joined the Billy Eckstine bandand recorded with Charlie Parker in 1945. Gordonpossessed a very distinctive and profound sound. BlowsHot and Cool is Gordon’s only existing recording withpianist Carl Perkins.
