Renata Scotto . . . was perhaps the finest Italian singing actress of the post-Callas generation . . . she attempted most of his great soprano roles and convinced through her deep understanding of Verdi style, her ability to find a wide spectrum of colour in a voice of limited timbre, her unfailing musicality and her intensity as a performer. All of these qualities are displayed in abundance in this "Luisa Miller" from the Met in 1979 . . . Her performance . . . is the revelation here, though she has stalwart support from Plácido Domingo´s ardent Rodolfo, Sherrill Milnes´s grandly sung Miller and the then 35-year-old James Levine´s athletic, exciting conducting . . . Scotto is capable of the most exquisite mezza voce singing . . . she is electrifying, . . . lending the words an irony that eludes most other interpreters of the part. I wish there were space to dwell on the many details of her singing and acting which leap so rivetingly from the screen, but the range of emotion she experiences in both her singing an physiognomy seems limitless and it´s hard to think of a more compelling candidate for this kind of role among today´s leading sopranos . . . By her side, Domingo sings gloriously . . . and his acting is effective, if generalized . . . his singing is magnificent . . . for Scotto´s fans, this fills an important gap in her available repertoire and, like her "Manon Lescaut" with Domingo and Levine at the Met (also DG), it really shouldn´t be missed.

Plácido Domingo sings magnificently as Rodolfo, stopping the show with "Quando le sere al placido", and the two basses, James Morris as Wurm and Bonaldo Giaiotti as Count Walter, are evil incarnate, particularly strong in their duet. Jean Kraft is an authoritative Duchess, imperious when confronted with her betrothed´s ingenuous sweetheart. The terror Scotto demonstrates in her presence, shaded with heartbreak and anger, are the hallmark of the sort of artist who illuminates less famous moments, giving them their due importance . . . This is a most welcome DVD.

. . . tout s´explique avec Renata Scotto . . . une vériste, ici physiquement et vocalement idéalement en place dans ce rôle de fille simple et droite, ambigu et périlleux, oů elle trouve une ingénuité (rappelant sa divine Sonnambula) . . . D´un costaud trio de basses se détache le Wurm superbement chanté de James Morris (un Wotan déjŕ en puissance), et Milnes est vocalement non moins superbe d´autorité. Ajoutons James Levine. Et les chżurs. Et l´orchestre du Metropolitan. On est au théâtre . . . ŕ l´absolument plus exemplaire niveau.

Morris joue les méchants avec délectation, Milnes les pčres de famille avec une voix qui n´a rien perdu de son impact, et Domingo, sans surprise, est un amoureux vibrant . . . Sans surprise également la direction de Levine, décidément l´un des chefs de théâtre les plus captivants de son époque. Ce n´est pas par hasard si j´ai gardé Renata Scotto pour la fin. Dans un rôle difficile (et ingrat parce que peu connu), elle est incomparable, trouvant d´instinct la simplicité, la confiance, le désespoir de la jeune paysanne, passant avec la męme aisance du lyrisme léger et virtuose de son air d´entrée ŕ des accents plus dramatiques (l´écriture de la lettre). Cette maîtrise du souffle, cette science du legato, ce sens infaillible des couleurs qui varient selon l´expression recherchée sont toujours un modčle et détournent l´attention de quelques stridences. Une grande interprčte ŕ son apogée . . .
