Josephine Baker, American-born French entertainer, was celebrated by artists and intellectuals of the era, who variously dubbed her the ‘Black Pearl’, the ‘Bronze Venus’ and the ‘Creole Goddess’. This album has American and French songs, mostly from the 1920s and 1930s. World War 2 stopped her further evolution and she pretty much stayed within this selection with the exception of the post war period, when her voice strengthened. She was one of the most popular singers in the world during her time. Her unique performances gave her songs resonance and meaning. Great versions of “Pretty Little Baby” and “Vous Faites Partie De Moi” (I’ve Got You Under My Skin).
